Merry Christmas! Danmaku is nearly 10 years old, and in celebration we are finally releasing to the public the Danmaku!!: Traditional Festival of Paradise public beta!
DanmakuTFoP-OpenBeta
This represents the game in what we think is the most complete, comprehensive version possible — redesigned frames, reworded rules text, and rebalanced card designs, combining over four sets and numerous Patreon exclusives into a single, cohesive package. For those who have never played, this is a great place to start. For those who have been with us from the beginning, it’s a fresh facelift with many new twists.
What’s included in Traditional Festival of Paradise
Traditional Festival of Paradise includes (almost) everything that we have made for Danmaku!! up to this point, including cards originally released in our three expansions: Lunatic Extra, Mutiny of Belittled Spirits, and Wolf of Black Market, as well as cards originally released on our Patreon.
As a compilation product, it is not expected that people play with all of the expansions (i.e. decks) at the same time. Rather, they are modules that can be swapped in or out to make a new experience or to suit the players at the table.
Danmaku!!: TFoP contains the following components:
- Role cards
- Character cards (100 characters total!)
- Main deck
- Incident deck
- Lunatic deck
- Mobs deck
- Market deck
- Animal Spirits cards
- Flowering Night cards
- Gambit cards (character-specific cards)
What’s new in Traditional Festival of Paradise
Combined main deck
The biggest change is the main deck, which incorporates main deck cards that were originally expansion-only cards. You can now play with these cards whether or not you are using that “expansion.” Only a few cards (such as incidents or specific characters) require a specific deck to work, and those cards are marked with one of the expansion symbols. If, for instance, a card gives you the option to draw from the mobs deck, but you aren’t using the mobs deck, you can’t choose that option.
Exchanging cards
Exchanging, which was introduced in Lunatic Extra and expanded in Wolf of Black Market, is now a core part of the game. Players can exchange cards 1) during their turn as an action, or 2) during any player’s exchange step. While this used to happen during the discard step, the exchange step is now its own step before the discard step to reduce confusion or unwanted interaction.
There are more things players can exchange for now:
- For 3 points, players can exchange for a main deck card
- For 5 points, players can exchange for a lunatic deck card
- Players can exchange for a market card equal to that card’s price
- Players can exchange for an spirits spirits card equal to its price
As before, you can only exchange main deck cards from hand (so no exchanging lunatic cards for more lunatic cards), but a new card type, points cards, can be exchanged as well. These show up on animal spirits cards and a few other places.
Finally, TFoP brings the rule of an exchange limit introduced in Wolf of Black Market and makes it a permanent rule in the game. What this means in practice is that you can only make one exchange per turn. However, because you can exchange on other players’ turns, you will generally not run out of opportunities to exchange. This helps limit the runaway snowball turns that can happen when players chain together multiple exchanges. Several market deck cards now directly interact with exchanging and can increase the exchange limit.
Gambit cards
While not new or unique to TFoP, the idea of a character that introduces unique cards to the game has been codified, and those cards that start outside of the game have been named gambit cards. For instance, Ringo creates dango cards, Urumi creates a stone baby, and Hatate makes photographs.
Current state of the beta
The cards are ready to go to print as is, so if you notice anything incorrect (from typos to huge oversights), please send the feedback to contact@mysteryparfait.com. For the digital public beta, the cards have a Danmaku logo over the art.
We are currently working on a digital rule book to accompany the cards, but it is still in progress and we want to get this out as soon as possible. Please wait warmly.
